Located on the island Bogue Banks, one of the southernmost islands of
the North Carolina Outer Banks, Pine Knoll Shores was originally platted
by descendants of President Theodore Roosevelt. Careful preservation of
the original maritime forests has led to a unique and wonderful refuge
for a variety of native plants and animals, and a feel unlike many
beach towns in the state.
Today Pine Knoll Shores is a mix of seasonal and vacation homes, retirees,
and year round residents. Natural preservation is still strongly required
by the town and deed restrictions. A 1.5 mile long canal in the central
residential section offers many non-waterfront homes water access and deep
water moorage. Waterfront property includes south facing beachfront and
north facing sound front homes. Very little commercial property exists,
and the nearest grocery stores, movie theaters, etc. are located in adjacent
Atlantic Beach. Pine Knoll Shores is home to one of the three North Carolina
Aquariums. The Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores reopens in the spring of 2006
after a 17 million dollar renovation.
